Not feeling a draft
By Ben Knight
“Trader Mo” was quiet on draft day.
Left with only a second- and fourth-round pick in the annual MLS auction of NCAA product, TFC GM Mo Johnston resisted the temptation to make headlines dealing up into the first round. He settled for a long-term project and a longshot, and the Reds roster remained relatively unruffled.
Good.
I admit I’m one who finds Trader Mo a bit of a carnival sideshow. I’d honestly be happier if the tents came down and the carts moved on.
But there’s a very good reason why Toronto FC didn’t have a lot of selections in this dubiously legal exercise in restraint of trade: they cleaned up last year.
Sam Cronin, Stefan Frei, O’Brian White. The first two instantly became solid, bankable MLS starters. White, battling back from a career-threatening knee injury, showed significant promise in limited playing time.
As soon as all those deals went down, Johnston fired off his top 2010 pick down to Texas to FC Fairground-Fun-For-Frolicking-Families for Canadian international Adrian Serioux.
TFC is now a team loaded with promising youth. Gambians Emmanuel Gomez and Amadou Sanyang wandered in later, and Fuad Ibrahim is still a hot prospect – and will still be a teenager for another year and two thirds.
The Reds also have some front-line stars in Dwayne de Rosario and Julian de Guzman.
In other words, they don’t need any more kids. Toronto’s gaping holes – striker, wing play, central defence – would be better filled by … players. Just some good, effective better-than-average pros would pretty much nail it.
The parallel truth is, there aren’t that many current TFC players who could ever be dealt straight-up for a draft pick. Carl Robinson or Marvell Wynne – both rumoured to be on the move yesterday – just can’t match the future potential of top young college kids who won’t count against the salary cap for a while.
When Mo finally got his moment, with the 24th pick overall, he grabbed 17-year-old central defender Zac Herold. How is a desperately young kid going to fill a position that cries out for veteran leadership? He isn’t. The hook here is he’s got six years of “Generation Adidas” exemption from the salary cap. He’s free, in other words. If he can play in three years, great. If not, he’s a really useful throw-in for a future hole-filling trade.
Pure game-playing, in other words – which is most of what this silly draft exercise consists of, anyway.
Overall, I’m giving Trader Mo a solid B for his drafting yesterday. It was a time to do nothing, he knew it, and got a couple of spare parts that might actually help him solve one of his many larger problems.
Now we need a new CBA, so everyone knows how much money there actually is to spend. Then Johnston’s got to get to work filling holes for real.
And while we’re in the neighbourhood, am I the only one who’s getting concerned that Nick Garcia is still on the Toronto roster? The veteran defender showed neither speed nor height last season, and opposing teams were deliberately – and successfully – running stunts on him down the stretch.
Garcia, of course, was Johnston’s teammate for many years in Kansas City, but new coach Preki builds on his back four, so that’s got to be the end of that, right?
Except Garcia, of course, was Preki’s teammate for many years in Kansas City as well.
I understand the real dealing hasn’t started yet, but there are few Toronto players with more miniscule trade value. Why is he still here?
Onward!

Ben, I would imagine Garcia is still here because his replacement isn’t. He isn’t the answer for TFC’s defence, and I think we all knew that when he arrived (when the last placed club in the other division sends you packing, well…). He was, briefly, a significant improvement over his predecessors. Then the other clubs found out two or three things he just couldn’t cope with and he saw nothing else for the remainder of the year.
I would hope that once the CBA is resolved, MJ will splash the cash on a quality central defender. If he doesn’t wrangle one through either a transfer or trade (less likely, given what he has to trade), my best guess would be TFC missing the playoffs… again.

acquiring a solid veteran central defender should be the number one priority for mo right now and i think that we can all agree that garcia is not the answer. ever since that game against colorado some years ago when robbo was forced to assume the role due to injury for a half, i’ve always wondered how he would perform in a permanent central defender position. down the middle we would have: robbo and nana on defence, JDG as defensive midfielder and DERO as attacking midfielder. how about it?

John Bladen…TFC is so overpromissing and underdelivering over the years that I don’t believe anything they say anymore…Once I have the opportunity to watch them play in a couple of games, then you can either confirm their claims of great drafts and imrovement or watch the old same old?…They keep making these bombastic announcements and they nothing happens.

MM… Yes, they truly ARE an MLSE property aren’t they?
They keep acting like they’ve got the best collection of talent around when the results and standings clearly show otherwise. It must be part of the MLSE experience, that… all their franchises seem to do it.
I don’t want to sound overly optimistic, but I do think that a full spring w de Guzman will help. That said, they need the CB sooner rather than later. I genuinely believe that this is a playoff club if they add just one quality centre back. The question is, will they get one? And, if so, from where?

John Bladen,
I agree with your assessment - this team is one solid defender away from the playoffs. As to where they could get one: Guevara was making $300k. I believe a team with TFC’s resources can find one solid MLS-level defender for that kind of money. After all, there are more soccer players on this planet than players of any other game and it’s not like MLS requires top tier talent.

looks like the egyptian saied is going to get a shot…
January 20th, 2010 at 7:50 pm
Hey Guys;
The rumour today is that TFC have signed Saied on trial…

Who knows how the trial will go, much less anything further. But he’s a step up and has proved he can play at a high level.

John Bladen…
I just asked you a question from the article you posted and it’s gone, disappeared?…The question was what the player do in terms of the mentioned problems in EPL?

MM…
From what I’ve read (and it’s far from comprehensive) Saied does not much care for being a squad player, or coming off the bench. He has left a couple of teams because he felt he wasn’t being played enough, or was being asked to back up what he considered to be inferior players. There has also been some suggestion that he clashed with managers on a fairly regular basis regardless of his playing time, but I’m not sure about that. As to Everton, I don’t know what happened in 2003 there. I know he wasn’t playing alot, but haven’t found anything explanatory regarding his time there.
David Moyes thought quite highly of him early on, but only kept him for a year, give or take. I believe they used him as a right back and a central defender.
He has been playing in Turkey and Egypt, most recently (I think) for Al-Ahly. I can’t claim to have seen much of him, but I’m told he is a quality defender, so long as he remains “happy” in his environment.
That said, at the moment it is just a trial, so TFC isn’t stuck with anyone they don’t want…

MM:
Sorry, I had the wrong club there, it was Al-Ahly from Tripoli he has played for most recently. His Egyptian Al-Ahly turn was at the beginning of his career.
As near as I can tell, he never played a competitive game for Everton, just a few friendlies. As I say, Moyes thought highly of him, but he left Everton voluntarily (allegedly because his mother was sick…). The book seems to be that he is a highly skilled and capable defender, but is perhaps not as committed to football as he should be (he changes teams with great regularity). He has given interviews in which he openly says things like “I’m not enjoying playing here… it’s difficult… I might retire instead of playing out my contract…” etc.
Let’s hope Guevara (or De Rosario) like money motivates him to play the way he can…

John Bladen…A couple of observations…
So he played in the Lybian League???…Can’t TFC find somebody equal to him, with less baggage locally?
Johann Smith, big US “star” didn’t make it in Czech, started a trial on Monday in Plzen and was done by Wednesday…Totally failed during a prep. game…I think he used to be with TFC as well at one point?
On the other hand Pospisil, who went to see what TFC was all about last year and didn’t come to terms with them,is doing great in Bohemians Prague, scored 2 goals in prep games and will get an A-Team’s contract…He was the 2002 U-21 Euro Champion along with Cech,Rosicky etc…TFC didn’t “sign him”…Can you believe it? A goal scoring striker!!!

MM…
Yep, sometimes it’s a mystery. Johann Smith did suit up for TFC briefly. Carver didn’t much care for him. Count me among those who thought he could be a fixture. I never saw enough of him to be able to make a reasonable (amateur) assessment, but clearly the TFC execs didn’t care for what they saw.
As to “who else” TFC might have been able to find locally, I don’t know. I have to assume that Mo has been beating the bushes and come up empty, hence his willingness to have a look see at someone with solid skills but considerable baggage. I would also assume that Mo knows he has limited time to fix the central defense… it’s something that’s needed doing for 3 years and he hasn’t made even a marginal attempt at addressing it. Maybe he’s ready to gamble on attitude issues but not lack of skill at this point? Just guessing, really.
I didn’t know about Pospisil! Sometimes players come over for a look but won’t be signed at any price (witness Huckerby, who came for the trial but was always going to California, according to his friends). Is Pospisil any relation to the former Czech national hockey team player (c 1975, I think)?
January 21st, 2010 at 10:10 pm
John Bladen…
No relation to the hockey player.Pospisil probably would play for less then 300K…
January 23rd, 2010 at 3:03 pm
John Bladen…
Pospisil did sign with Bohemians Praha…:
