Vitti
By Ben Knight
So, sure, everyone in Toronto FC land is talking about Amado Guevara signing with a team in his native Honduras and there goes the playmaker and we didn’t get anything for him and I’ll probably get in on that tomorrow or something unless something else happens and you know how it goes, right?
So I want to write about Pablo Vitti.
The young Argentine has also been let float away, having produced little more than a headed-in goaltending mistake every not-quite-900-minutes on the field for TFC. A couple of nice assists, too, one of which he didn’t actually get credit for.
We all got sold a bag of hype on this one. A $300,000 contract was signed, even though the question “how does an allegedly good young Argentine goal scorer end up playing in the Ukrainian league?” never quite got answered.
Flashes of brilliance? Certainly. A darting run that beat three opponents, followed by a perfectly weighted rolling shot an inch past the far post. Fans gushed. Bloggers happily relaxed and said things were going to work out fine.
That play, alone, bought Vitti some very passionate defenders and fans. And man oh boy did I start hearing from them when I started noting publicly that the “kid” wasn’t producing anything that ended up on the scoreboard.
And I was willing to buy it for a while, too. Heck, maybe he was being played out of position all the time. Maybe it was my fault that I saw good moves and lousy link-up. Maybe all his link-up work came when I didn’t see it. Which would mean it came when he wasn’t being flashy. Which made me wonder why everyone was praising his flash.
So I just put my head down and kept watching. I’ve been wrong before. And I’d admit being incorrect if suddenly faced with a rising evidence pile of Pablo Vitti goals.
In the end, I don’t quite understand how TFC GM Mo Johnston found Vitti in Ukraine, and why he was convinced a chronic non-producer was going to light up MLS to the tune of more than tem per cent of Toronto’s salary cap. Certainly there was pressure on Johnston to sign South Americans a year ago.
But, in all blessed honesty, the answer to the question “how does an allegedly good young Argentine goal scorer end up playing in the Ukrainian league?” is – they don’t.
Bringing a guy like Vitti in on a low-money gamble could have been a savvy move. Paying him that much – for that little – hurt the team.
But the roster spot and the cap room are free now. A South American playmaker or finisher might still be a good gamble for a team with big holes up front and on the flanks.
… As long as he’s playing south of the Equator, on this side of the Atlantic.

I, for one, was never a fan of Vitti either. Personally, I’m pleased with his dismissal. I’m also intrigued by the recent changes and hope this shakes things up.

Mo didn’t find Vitti in the Ukraine. He “found” him at BMO field in July 2008, when Independiente beat TFC 1-0 in a friendly match, on a goal from… Pablo Vitti. That’s what worries me the most about the whole Vitti deal: is that the extent of Toronto FC’s “scouting” in South America? I don’t think we’ve ever signed a decent player directly from South or Central America. (We have tried our luck with a few Caribbean players though.) Other teams in MLS have done much better in that department.
I think it will be interesting to see how Vitti does with a different coach and different teammates, and on grass. Will he ever get his groove back? I assume he’s going to have to get used to playing at a much lower salary if he wants to make it anywhere. That’s what I heard many TFC fans say in the past season: that Vitti might be good to keep if you could sign him at less than half his current salary — in that case, he might have been worth the risk to see if he could use his skills & develop into something better in a different environment (new coach, new pitch, new players, new tactics).
Anyway, we move on, and I just HOPE Mo and Preki find a bunch of decent players to fill new and old gaps in the squad before the start of spring camp…

My day is now complete. Vitti is no more. The only player I disliked more in TFC history than Vitti was…………..Andrea Lombardo….but at least we got him on the cheap.
I really couldn’t care less what continent our players come from as long as they play with heart, skill and determination………….plus they score the odd if that is supposed to be their mandate…………..and Vitti failed on all of those counts.

I was one who thought he might be a good fit, and defended him most of the year. It started out as a full defense saying he was just getting used to the mls style, then it was yes, but not for 300K, then yes but for no more than 200K, then 100K, then how the hell did he get here in the first place.
At the end of the day, I dont think anyone will miss him

Ben, would you include Mo in the “we all got sold a bag of hype” crowd?
I have to say, I didn’t see Vitti’s allegedly mesmerizing goal vs TFC. However, I think he had ample playing time to mesmerize us just once while wearing the red, and didn’t. Maybe he’ll go somewhere else and turn into Drogba or Henry, but I’d wager against it - heavily.
Just another guy with great skills but no production. We wish him well, wherever he goes. Good point about the Ukrainian league… I assumed he’d come straight from Independiente here… oh well, live and learn (though no evidence of that in the front office yet).
As for Guevara, I won’t miss him. Fantastic technical skills and ball control, but only prepared to use same 4 or 5 times a season. He sulked far too much and that affected his performance badly. Can we replace his skill easily? No.
But what is the value of a skill set that remains unused most of the time?
So far so good w Preki in charge, IMO. Let’s hope he continues to remake this team… they need to be ‘harder to play against’.

You know how many Argentinians,Brazilians,Africans etc..Asians as well, are all over Europe even in unlikely places{2nd,3rd leagues in Belarus,Moldova,Ukraine etc…} as long as they can get a contract, get paid and be close to,what they consider, the “Big Leagues” etc…That’s what they want…Thousends of them.

Yet we still have Nick Garcia…

Ben, will TFC be able to use the salary that they dumped on Guevara, Vitti, and Fellinga? How far over the cap were TFC with allocation money?
December 18th, 2009 at 11:10 am
I would have kept Vitti, if he was willing to re-negotiate his contract to $65,000 a year, which is all he’s worth. Obviously he had to go. No finishing, but allegedly he had a few dribbing skills, though from what I saw one on one he lost to the defender at least half the time.
Garcia should be next to go, if there are other better defenders out there.
Barrett is also not getting paid what he is worth. He has hussle and wants to play for TFC, it seems. But he’s a striker. Only one quality is important for a striker and Barrett lacks it- finishing. He’s only worth about $75,00 to 80,000; not the $202,500.00 Mo agreed to pay him.

Oh, and are Robinson and Brennan worth the $500,000.00 they are tying up? Or, could TFC get more value for this money dumping them both for a top level central defender for $500,000 or a top striker for 500,000, OR one decent central defender and one decent striker at $250 a piece.
December 20th, 2009 at 2:34 pm
Good Points, Juve.
TFC needs to field a certain number of Canadians, so Brennan would likely be retained (though hopefully as a MF/Winger, not LB). I like Robbo, but it may well be that he makes too much money to be the 2nd holding MF (assuming de Guzman doesn’t leave in January, which I’ve heard nothing about of late).
I’d spend most of the money saved through Guevara and Vitti on a CB (and then some if the cap goes up enough this off season). In fact, if it were up to me (goal drought or no), I’d spend every penny the club can on shoring up the back line.
What do you think: Brennan on left wing, Barrett on right?

Vitti made too much dough for what he delivered. Since he’s been made available no other MLS team has expressed interest in his services (that I’m aware of, at least). So I think it’s addition by subtraction for TFC.
December 20th, 2009 at 8:31 pm
He probably was making one tenth of that in Ukraine,if at all…
December 25th, 2009 at 12:05 pm
^And your point?
December 29th, 2009 at 1:38 am
^^The point being that TFC definitely overpaid for his services.

[...] I will. A lot of TFC fans will remember Vitti as a $300,000 waste of organic matter. All two goals in 26 appearances of him. Once heralded [...]
